Xian

Xian is reportedly the second most visited city in China, but you can expect a first-class visit in this inspiring city of rich Chinese heritage.

The cultural significance of Xian is astonishing. Not only is it considered the birthplace of Chinese civilization, but it was the first stop on the Silk Road. The area is most well-known for the Terracotta Warriors, which can be seen in person by visiting the local burial site (more information below).

The best times to visit Xian are in the spring or autumn seasons when temperatures are not overly hot or cold. But you can book your luxury guided tours at any time of the year with Sandhills Travel, one of the most popular local tour companies who will make any Xian experience a special one!

The Famous Terracotta Army

The Terracotta Army is an army of sculptures made to protect the first Emperor of China in the afterlife. These sculptures were made and placed with the emperor in his burial and are therefore considered a unique type of burial art.

Although they were made around 200BC, they were not discovered until the late 20th century by a group of farmers. Included in this 8000-strong sculpted army is an estimated:

  • 130 chariots
  • 520 horses
  • 159 cavalry horses

You can witness the army by visiting three pits at the burial site. Pit #1 is the most impressive and is estimated to include 2,000 of the soldiers. To avoid scams and queues, it is often better to visit with a guided tour.

Other Things to Do in Xian

When you are not marvelling at ancient burials sites, there is so much more to explore. You may want to experience the famous local cuisine in one of many beautiful restaurants, ride around the city wall on bikes or enjoy some retail therapy at local stores selling handcrafted goods.
