Marvel at the Beauty of Dali
Dali is renowned for its spectacular scenery and among the most popular places to visit is Erhai Lake. The second-largest highland lake in China, it is shaped like an ear and has waters which are crystal clear.
The lake is set against the spectacular backdrop of the Cang Mountains and the waters stretch over an expanse of 250 sq km. A boat tour is one of the best ways to see the little islands, as well as the small temples and villages dotted around the shores.
The Three Pagodas are situated very close to the lake, and are one of the most iconic sights in the region. The middle pagoda is more than 1100 years old and one of the tallest ever built in China.
Other places of interest in Dali include Zhoucheng Village where you will find traditional Bai customs and crafts, and Taihe Town Ruins, a former mountainside village.
Historic Sights in Lijiang
Moving on to Lijiang, you’ll quickly discover that Dali doesn’t have the monopoly on panoramic views. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is one of the region’s top tourist spots, and a holy place for the Naxi people. With 13 snow-covered peaks which stretch out for 15km, a trip on the Glacier Park cable car is a sublime experience.
While you’re there, take in the Impression Lijiang, a show about local culture and heritage which is set in one of the highest amphitheaters in the world. Set into Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the rock faces themselves become part of the show where you’ll see traditional dress and storytelling showcased.
There is lots to see and do in Lijiang, but no trip is complete without visiting the Lijiang Ancient Town. With cobbled streets, narrow alleys and waterways, it’s just like taking a step back in time.
