Huangshan Mountain Range (The Yellow Mountain)

Come See the Huangshan Mountain 黄山Range -The Yellow Mountain。

The Huangshan Mountain Range is one of China’s most loved tourist destinations. In 1990, these mountains were even declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. It offers visitors the chance to bask in spectacular scenery and take majestic photos from sunrise to sunset. But why are these mountains so special? Why are they called the yellow mountains, and most importantly, why should you visit?

A Brief History of the Huangshan Mountain Range

The name of the range means the yellow mountain. But this is not because these mountains look yellow. The real reason they have this nickname is because they were dedicated to Huang Di, a mythical Yellow Emperor from the 8th century. It is believed that the Yellow Emperor lived in the mountain range, perfecting new medicines. And he even became younger by using the mountain’s hot springs!

Reasons to Visit the Huangshan Mountain Range

Some tourists go to the yellow mountain for spiritual reasons and to visit Buddhist temples, while others travel to witness the range’s incomparable beauty. Lots of hikers and photographers get to see unique rock formations, pines and hot springs – all made even better by a blanket of mystical cloud that dances along the mountain tops.

Here are some of the main points of interest when visiting:

  • Wonder at the Greeting Guest Pine, a naturally formed pine that looks like a human figure greeting new visitors.
  • View oddly shaped rocks, each has its own interesting backstory.
  • The sea of cloud occurs usually after wetter days or sunrise. If you want to witness this magical occurrence it is best to visit between November and May.
  • Take a dip in the local hot springs after your day of hiking. These springs are suggested to have healing powers and even make you younger (no guarantees!)
  • Buddha’s Light is a naturally occurring phenomenon involving the sun and clouds. It gives people the appearance of a halo effect – and it makes an awesome photo. This can happen in different places around the world, but the conditions of these mountains make it one of the unique spots to witness this effect.
  • The range offers cable cars to get around easier, as well as cafes, hotels and nearby villages also worth exploration.

How Long Should I Visit?

There is a lot to see and do at the range. Most people spend more than a day here so they can soak up the hot springs and really get to experience the area.

Because there is so much to see, it is always worth booking a trip with a guided tour!
